Just Breathe…

Whew! Thank God it’s Friday. This has been one crazy week. I think I’ve crammed about 2 weeks worth into one. At times like this, I remind myself to just breathe.

I recently heard one of my favorite wellness gurus, Dr. Andrew Weil, speak. He said some pretty interesting things about the power of the breath. Like it’s one of the few bodily functions that can be both conscious and unconscious. He suggested we might even be able to connect with our autonomous nervous system by consciously regulating our breathing.

He taught the audience a breathing technique for relaxation. It’s simple but powerful. He has had patients that were able to lower or eliminate various medications they were on, just by doing this regularly. Here’s how it goes:

Bronchi, bronchial tree, and lungs.

Sit in a chair with your spine straight and feet flat on the floor. Put your tongue touching the roof of your mouth just behind your front teeth. (He didn’t say it, but this completes an energetic circuit in your body.) Breathe in for a count of 4, breathing deep into your abdomen. Hold the breath for a count of 7. Then breathe out through your mouth (tongue still touching the top teeth) for a count of 8. Do this for 4 cycles, twice a day.

That’s it — the 4-7-8 breath. Your counts will probably be fairly quick at first, but the better you get at this, the slower you will be able to count. It’s a good technique to do just before going to sleep, or whenever you’re feeling stressed.

Another crazy week ahead? Don’t sweat it. Just breathe….
